I buy the books at the Dollar Store! You're covering the pages anyway so just look for the size you want. Hardcover books are easier to work with and look much nicer.

PAPER-
I like Canson Mixed Media paper but any art paper is good. I like mixed media paper because you can use watercolors on it and it looks nice.

WATERCOLORS-
I have very expensive watercolors but honestly, this set is my go to set. My students always want to borrow it because there are so many colors and they don't have to blend them to get the color or shade they want.

PENS-
I love using good ink pens. Whatever you do, go with a pen that is waterproof. That way you can watercolor and it won't run. Sharpies are great and I LOVE Micron pens.
